Fourteen Jordanians Die During Haj in Saudi Arabia

During the annual Muslim Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, fourteen Jordanians have died, some due to heat stroke, and seventeen others are reported missing, according to a statement from the Jordanian foreign ministry.

At least six of the deaths were confirmed to be heat-related, with temperatures in Mecca expected to reach 47 degrees Celsius (116 Fahrenheit). The haj, which is one of the largest mass gatherings globally, will conclude on Wednesday and is anticipated to have over 1.8 million participants.

The Saudi health ministry has issued advisories for pilgrims to stay hydrated and avoid peak heat hours. The Jordanian foreign ministry is coordinating with Saudi authorities on handling the deceased according to the wishes of their families

Fourteen Jordanians have died, with at least six deaths due to heat stroke. Seventeen Jordanians are reported missing.

Mecca is experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures predicted to reach 47 degrees Celsius (116 Fahrenheit).

3. Pilgrimage Scale

The haj pilgrimage will end on Wednesday and is expected to attract more than 1.8 million participants this year.

4. Health Advisory

The Saudi health ministry has warned of high temperatures and advised pilgrims to stay hydrated and avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

5. Coordination for Deceased

The Jordanian foreign ministry is working with Saudi authorities to manage the burial or transport of the deceased in accordance with their families’ wishes.
